Volunteer Opportunities
Notes from Friends Hospice of the Valleys serves hundreds of patients every year. We honor them by sharing their stories. They remind us every day of the meaning and purpose of our work and that human connection is at the heart of the hospice experience. The following are notes Hospice of the Valleys has received from the families of patients that we have been privileged to provide hospice care. "I can't believe next month will be the 5 year anniversary of Mom's passing. I hope you all are doing well." "Thank you for your heart and love of the Lord. Your help and quick response to those in need is gratefully appreciated. From our family to you and yours, we thank you. God Bless you all." THANK YOU!
Temecula Creek Women's Golf Club Donation We'd like to give a special thankn you to the Temecula Creek Women's Golf Club for their support of Hospice of the Valleys! They generously donated $5,000 to help provide services to our terminally ill patients and offer relief of suffering at end-of-life.

National Hospice & Palliative Care Month
The Real Heroes in Health Care Leslee B. Cochrane, MD. Executive Medical Director November is National Family Caregivers Month, so I thought it would be fitting to pay tribute to the estimated 42 million Americans who provide unpaid care to their family members on a routine basis. According to the Center for Disease Controls Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, about 25% of American adults reported providing some amount of unpaid care or assistance to a family member with a long-term illness. According to a 2023 study by the AARP the economic value of unpaid family care-givers exceeded $600 Billion! In 2030 we will mark a demographic turning point in America, as all Baby Boomers will have reached aged 65 and one in five Americans will be over age 65! As people grow older, the risk of requiring care due to chronic illness including dementia and debility increases. Because Medicare does not cover caregiver expenses or long-term nursing home care, the responsibility for the majority of long-term caregiving falls to the family. With the exception of those who privately purchase expensive long-term care insurance, few families have the financial resources to hire outside caregivers, so the family members shoulder the burden associated with caregiving. Family caregivers are truly the unsung heroes of Health Care. Although it cannot be measured in dollars, the emotional and spiritual impact of their loving care far outweighs the $600 Billion monetary value of the physical care provided. Unfortunately, the tremendous stress experienced by family caregivers can have negative impacts on caregivers. According to the CDC, caregivers experience higher levels of depression and anxiety, compromised immune function and an increased risk of early death. If you know of someone who is a family caregiver, below are some ideas on how you might show your appreciation for them during National Caregivers Month:[i] Ten ways to Celebrate National Caregiver Month 1. Offer a few hours of respite time to a family caregiver so they can spend time with friends, or simply relax. 2. Send a card of appreciation or a bouquet of flowers to brighten a family caregiver's day. 3. Encourage local businesses to offer a free service for family caregivers through the month of November. 4. Help a family caregiver decorate their home for the holidays or offer to address envelopes for their holiday cards. 5. Offer comic relief. Purchase tickets to a local comedy club, give a family caregiver your favorite funny movie to view, or provide them with a book on tape. 6. Find 12 different photos of the caregiver's family and friends. Have a copy center create a calendar that the family caregiver can use to keep track of appointments and events 7. Offer to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for a caregiving family in your community, so they can just relax and enjoy the holiday. 8. Take a few minutes to write a letter. Encourage your faith community to ask for prayers not only for those who are ill, but also those who care for them. 9. Encourage family caregivers to become a part of the National Family Caregiver Story Project. It's a great place to not only share but read about others in like situations. 10. Help a family caregiver find new educational materials and support through family caregiving web sites or by calling local social service agencies for help.
Hospice of the Valleys celebrates National Family Caregivers Month Celebrated each November, National Family Caregiver Month is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country and raise awareness about caregiving issues. This year's theme is: "I Care..." This theme focuses on the importance of self-identifying as a caregiver to ensure the care recipient and the caregiver receive appropriate support. We appreciate all that family caregivers do. We are honored to partner with family caregivers to provide support and assistance as they care for their loved ones. Mary's Bench (Part 3) Mike Patton Bereavement Counselor/Spiritual Care It was my turn to watch Malia on a recent Saturday morning after playing pickleball. You see, once Lisa has fed, dressed and gotten her ready for the day, they drive down to the courts and we switch responsibilities. I take our 2-year-old granddaughter and Lisa plays pickleball, a sport we got to know because of our relationship with Bill and Mary! On this particular Saturday, Malia and I stopped at a playground by the Canyon Lake Lodge. She loves that playground... and it makes for getting her good and tired for an afternoon nap (hers and mine). While she was enjoying the slides and jungle gym activities, I noticed four geese had come up to the fencing around the playground. Geese can be pretty aggressive, but these four just stood there and stared at me. It was like they were being kind, an unexpected connection that had a strange quality about it, and that rather than posing a threat to anyone who might try to share the sidewalk with them, they were just there as if to remind me of something. I was staring into the beaked face of one goose when I remembered the last time I had been remotely close to these geese! It was on the day of Mary Koster's Celebration of Life at the Canyon Lake Amphitheater (see photo below). I even said out loud to the goose, "Hey Mary!" The service had gone pretty well on April 27, 2024. Bill had spoken and shared his beautiful words of honor and remembrance, Jerod and Sarah, their son and daughter had both shared, as well as many of Mary's friends. It was my turn to speak and to wrap up the service... and while I was speaking, these four geese started from stage left and slowly and deliberately walked in front of the stage area, between me and the mourners gathered, all the way to stage right and off to the lake. All I could say was, "Wow!" At that point I carefully brought the service to a close. Mary's bench is a good place to recall good stuff! Such a strange and serendipitous comic relief that was orchestrated by these Canyon Lake geese... and the repeat performance at Malia's favorite playground... well all I can say is "Wow!"
