Thank You, Chaplain Bill Last week, we wished our Chaplain Bill well after many years serving our community, hospice patients and families. Bill will be incredibly missed and will always be remembered for playing guitar and singing sweet melodic tunes to our patients. We'll miss you!
Tribute to Chaplain Bill Mike Patton Bereavement Counselor/Spiritual Care It seemed appropriate for the bereavement guy to write about the retirement and moving out of state of our beloved "Chaplain Bill" Koster. As with any grief, there is a reluctance at first to believe it's true, but I literally saw him leave! So I raise my coffee cup to my colleague, my neighbor, and my friend. In the course of a career it is possible to meet someone who profoundly and positively changes your life. That was my experience with Bill Koster. I remember going with him to Sun City Gardens where he sat down in the common area and got his guitar out. Patients from the entire memory unit were wheeled in to be seated as close as they could get... and I witnessed the magic of a rock star as he delighted the residents with old songs that they enthusiastically sang with him! I found in Bill a wisdom, kindness, and charm that matched his talent. I would continue to learn from him for the entire time we worked together, which I know is an experience shared by so many of his colleagues at Hospice of the Valleys. Seven years ago Bill and Mary moved to a condo on Treasure Island in Canyon Lake. Upon seeing the lakefront condo, and the charm of the little community, I said, "Dude, would it be too weird if Lisa and I moved here, too?" I'm not sure Bill ever answered, but Mary said, "Yes, move here!" So we did... and for the past six years we have been neighbors in what I have affectionately termed "the senior dorms." During these years our work life and home life have been uniquely intertwined with collaboration of our spiritual care and bereavement work, shared interests in boating, Pickleball, great food, and many shared events. As our neighbors, Bill and Mary introduced us to many wonderful people in Canyon Lake and I can say that we found in Bill and Mary a warmth, wisdom, and joy that has deeply marked us for good and for life. While dealing with some serious health issues over the past couple of years, Bill and Mary continued to work, build relationships with family and friends, research and endure treatments, as well as do routine self-care. For two years Bill and I walked together at 6am, everyday but Sunday. It has proven to be one of the greatest gifts he gave to me... routine time. His wit, wisdom, and love for storytelling made our early mornings a healthy start that is sorely missed. I found Bill to be one of the kindest, wisest, and honest friends I have ever known. With their move to Michigan, Bill and Mary will be living nearer to their birth families. Mary's cancer has not been kind to her, so it seems best that they will be near her dad and Bill's mom along with their siblings and many friends at this time. His legacy is cherished.
